William S. Jackson was born September 4, 1934 in Philadelphia and lived in Springfield, Delaware County, until age 5 when his family moved to Clearfield, Clearfield County, Pa. There he attended elementary and junior high school.
His father, William K. Jackson, joined the Army in 1944 and, after basic and advanced infantry training, he was sent to France to a replacement depot and joined the 104th Infantry Division for fighting through Belgium, Holland, and into Germany, where he was killed February 23, 1945 in the Roer River crossing.
In December 1946 his mother remarried Bradford B. Crunk, a World War II Army veteran of the Medical Corps, who had spent the war as a basic training officer at Carlisle Barracks, Pa., and had stayed rather than return to Texas, having attained employment with Sharp & Dohme Pharmaceuticals as their sales rep in central Pa.
