WWII US Army veteran Russell Sattazahn, from Schaefferstown, PA, who's 99 years old, served as a Private in Company G, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, during 1945 in Belgium and Germany as a replacement rifleman. He served as a scout for his rifle squad and received the Purple Heart Medal for wounds that led to the loss of his right hand.
In May 1944, Russell registered for the draft and was soon drafted into the Army, shortly after high school. He trained at Camp Blanding in Florida. His 17 week basic training was cut short in the 15th week because of the Battle of the Bulge, as replacements were needed in Europe. He crossed the Atlantic in a convoy, on the USS Wakefield, following behind the Queen Mary. He was assigned to the 1st Infantry Division, 18th Regiment, Company G.
