About the event

During the Great Depression Russell Bomgardner was hired at age seven for $1 per month to work in farm fields. Russell was drafted in February 1945 at 18 years of age. When he was drafted he was working at a shoe factory. After receiving orders in Harrisburg, PA he was then transported by bus to New York where he received basic training for the US Navy. Following boot camp, specialized training, including ship cruises, was completed.  Russell was then assigned to the USS Allagash, a US Navy tanker/oiler, for the duration of his military service until his July 14, 1946 discharge. While serving on the Allagash Russell performed a number of duties and was trained to fire and fired 20mm cannons on the ship. Work had begun on the construction of the Allagash on October 26, 1944 and the ship was launched on April 14, 1945.

The ship was commissioned by the US Navy on August 21…
